David Humpage
Classically trained. Studied electronic music at University of Utrecht. Extensive experience in free improvisation / performance art / "experimental" theatre / film / image-based work. Has appeared at most major European festivals including e.g. Nancy, Copenhagen, Dubrovnik, Valladolid, Amsterdam, Huddersfield (Contemporary Music) and Bracknell (International Jazz), performing with such people as Phil Minton, Lol Coxhill, Dagmar Krause, Trevor Watts, Evan Parker, Melanie Pappenheim, Clive Bell, Lou Glandfield and many others. Main instruments: violin, viola, piano. Other instruments include (in no particular order): hand percussion, kit drums, sound-source guitar, flute, 'ud, bass rackett, ocarina, recorders & other small pipes, synthesisers, various live electronics and computer. Was involved as programmer with Composers Desktop Project. Has experience ranging from orchestral playing to the most implausible site-specific performance situations; has run (among others) an improvising rock band, an electric viola/drums performance duo and a small, flexible music-theatre group. Lectures/workshops at various universities and colleges on topics ranging from e.g. music for imagery in own work through to Arvon Foundation courses on "writing words for music / theatre". Was musical director of IOU Theatre Co. for a long period. Currently working intensively on "paper" composition whilst (with the other hand) using recent IRCAM products to develop custom live-performance software and associated performances with present group "Irregulus". |
